Dr. Jamie Swan Bio

Welcome to Thriving-Potential

I am a passionate, driven, sometimes self-doubting, positive force in the lives of those around me. Yes, I said sometimes self-doubting. My business is born from my struggle with the very things my clients now come to me for help with. My greatest passions are; overcoming trauma, men’s issues, building self-esteem, improving interpersonal relationships and business /entrepreneurship.

I strive to measure my life by the yardstick of positive impact on the people around me and I get so incredibly excited when my clients begin to realize their potential and put it to great use (as in let it thrive).

Here are some descriptions of the ways I work.

I believe that we all have what it takes to succeed but sometimes we’ve had experiences in life that have created fear, or limiting beliefs. These experiences can be so distressing that we can’t see our potential clearly, let alone devote energy to letting it thrive.

It was enlightening when I learned that there are ways to work through these experiences and beliefs. I continue to work through mine and take immense pride in being able to facilitate that process with my clients as well. Life is a journey and I want to help make it a more fulfilling one.

I work in an integrative way with evidence based modalities, in a supportive and empowering environment. I use tools such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Ego state Therapy, solutions focused brief therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These tools all have strong research support  for their ability to assist clients in removing limiting beliefs and overcoming traumatic or distressing thoughts and memories.

I offer counselling to individual adults and adolescents (13 years old+) in the following areas:

  • Men’s Issues
  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Grief
  • Self-esteem
  • Infertility
  • Sleep Issues
  • Trauma
  • Interpersonal concerns
  • Women’s Issues
  • Mood Disorders
  • Thought Disorders

I also work with couples to strengthen their relationship, overcome hardship or in learning to co-parent after the marriage or relationship has ended.

Having run several businesses myself and having been an entrepreneur almost my entire life (growing up home of entrepreneurs), I have a great respect for what goes into the pursuit. Likewise, having made the jump from the business world into the mental health world, I can understand the complexities of making the decision to transition careers.

Business Background

I graduated from the University of Birmingham, in the UK from an accelerated MBA program in International Strategic Business Relations. Since then, I have used those skills extensively, running small to medium sized organizations. Some of my accomplishments include start-ups, business purchases, turnarounds, shifting corporate culture, achieving significant cost reductions to maintain profitability in economic downturn and creating systems to streamline processes to achieve greater efficiency.

While running these companies, I also completed my Masters in Counselling Psychology and began my Doctorate in Psychology. To say I’m used to a dynamic, fast-paced environment, with many different demands and time constraints is probably an understatement. This type of lifestyle has certainly taught me many valuable skills, including the importance of self-care. I invite the opportunity to assist with any challenge you may be facing.
